Jan's Perfect Man is a comedy about Dr. Jan Shulman, a scientist whose human-cloning research is taken away from her just as her personal and financial life collapses. Jan secretly continues the experiment at home and realizes she may be able to solve two problems at once: finish her research and make money by creating custom-designed men for women who can afford them. She pitches the idea to her wealthy Aunt Tilly and celebrity singer Traquita Lemuel. What begins as the promise of the perfect man soon proves that perfection is harder to program than Jan expected.

Traquita Lemuel |Female |African-American |Age: 18–100 |Role Type: Principal
Traquita Lemuel is a wealthy, African-American, famous singer who has already been through three husbands. She is confident, blunt, skeptical and accustomed to people wanting something from her. She initially has little patience for Jan's presentation but the possibility of having a man designed exactly to her specifications gets her attention quickly. Her reactions should feel sharp, contemporary and natural, with strong comic timing but no exaggerated 'character voice. Lines: What does this have to do with me? Wait. You're saying you can make a custom-made man? A million dollars?!
Jan Shulman |Female |Any Ethnicity |Age: 30–40 |Role Type: Principal
Jan is a 35-year-old scientist and Harvard graduate. She is brilliant, obsessive, emotional, quirky and intensely committed to her work. She can be dramatic and impulsive, but she is also confident in her science and completely serious when explaining something outrageous. For this scene, Jan is pitching an impossible invention as if it is a practical business opportunity. The performance should sound intelligent, human and matter-of-fact, not cartoonish. Lines: Ladies, I'm glad you decided to meet with us. My name is Jan Shulman, well Aunt Tilley you already know me and I am a scientist. I have made a world-changing discovery that I want to share with you. Well, I happen to know from reading the tabloids that you are single and rich. I need the money and you have the opportunity to design the perfect man for yourself. It's worth every penny
Aunt Tilly |Female |Any Ethnicity |Age: 70–80 |Role Type: Principal
Aunt Tilly is a wealthy woman in her seventies who moves in a high-society world. Her husband of 50 years has recently left her for a much younger woman. She is hurt, proud, spirited, funny and still very interested in romance. She is not frail or timid. In Jan's pitch scene, Tilly begins curious and slightly skeptical, then becomes fascinated when the 'man' feels real. The humor should come from honest reactions, not from playing her as a caricature of an older woman. Lines: A custom-made man? Oooh, he does feel real. How much is this going to cost?
